Rebel. I was kind of surprised. When I did drink, it was in excess. RM: How did you decide on your particular style? I gotta go out there and try to get in this business. _[laughs] _Before its too late! As a result, Revenge was recorded in two stages between legs of Coopers world tour. Theres nothing wrong with that. Well, yeah. I was the one who really wanted to do it. Whose decision was it? And he said No, hes gotta do what hes gotta do. So I decided to try and teach myself. AD: He's a drummer by nature. You can play quietly in a small area and it doesn't matter, but in big areas, people have to see movement on stage. You can't have million-note fills allover the place be- cause people can't hear them, they can't understand it, and so they won't want to buy it. After that, I'm on a different continent and David and John take an absolute eon to do the vocals and all the guitar tracks and they use all kinds of different studios. It's fun while you're there, especially if you're building something you want to build-like a song that you will be performing on stage. Still am. But I didnt realize what we had done together until I stopped. But youre asking me how it felt. And then you went on hiatus. RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? Then we'd go out on the road again and when I'd get back, I would have to start over again because I wouldn't have the chance to practice on the road. So I decided to try drums. While I was doing that, David Bowie called and invited me to one of his gigs. And Id always wanted to do a record with him, because I just loved his musicalityI loved the fact that he played like a wicked guitar player, and was always curious what Id sound like playing with him. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? Im not sure what Im gonna do with it yet, but I got a lot of material, and a lot of it I really like. Pete writes these big, off the wall, sort of English rock songs, with big dramatic openings and classical-type things. Was it weird, coming back to Journey after that? Cynthia Plaster Caster: The Groupie Who Made Molds Of Famous Penises It's a situation that you have to grow into. And a lot of time spent together can chew on a friendship. Because I am gonna get this done, eventually. But I needed to be ready to lay down and do this thing. [long pause, laughs.] Nothing was more important than being part of this huge family called Journey. And so I started a long process, seeing many doctors, and the guys got impatient. No way could I tell them that they had just reached the first step and we had a lot more steps to go. I dont know. So[long pause] when we did the VH1 thing, I said there was quite some time where I never really felt part of the band. And only now, when people come up to me, and tell me what it meant to them, do I realize what the band accomplished. You get in a baseball team and some people like each other and some people hate each other, but they still play together. But we were also working together. So at the end of that conversation, I said Look, you go call whatever you wanna do with whomever youve checked out something else. Im just happy to be on the right track now, for once in a row. And you can only run on the road and be in front of people so long before it doesnt fix you enough, to where you can run away from things you havent addressed. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. AD: I basically understand what I should be doing by common sense. Way after that. He'd just call out a song and tell me whether it was a shuffle or whatever, and give me a nod if there was a break. I don't feel I'm perspiring my energy away, like I used to. Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood Opens Up on Relationship With Jeff Beck I mean, he's one of the most underrated yet not underrated because anybody that has heard his playing is respectful, especially drummers. It just completely slays me. But it seemed like, for my life, to save it, I had to stop and get out. We met in San Rafael, we sat on the edge of the marina, and I just told them, I cant do this anymore. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. So you can't rehash what you did before if somebody else is playing something new. Its a very fine line. lt made it really hard to keep up with the jazz. And we ended up making two more recordswe did Look Into the Future and then Next, and each record sold progressively less than the last one, but we attained a huger live audience, because we were playing live so much. Mercedes Lewis as Girl Who Was A Sofa Sal Lombardo as Himself Meredith Monk as Red Face Girl Billy Mundi as Rollo I know I'm going to do an album sometime. If you go back to that, what are you going back to now? So thats why I said, Maybe we really are done. Id left to find my life, once before, gone back to it, to try to reclaim something we once had, and then we kinda fell into that same place again. I mean, I didnt say anything inflammatory to him. But Im just not in it for the money. You must put that in there, the preface, because its important. Oh, most certainly, I was the new kid on the block with them. Liverpool drummer Aynsley Dunbar had been working with Merseybeat hitmakers The Mojos (their "Everything's Alright" reached no.9 in 1964) in their later incarnation as "Stu James & The Mojos," and recorded two singles with them before the group disbanded in 1966. . Definitely. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. Mother of Athena Strand Joins Lawsuit Against Accused Killer, Employer Did you enjoy working with another drummer? All these years, its funnyI never really felt part of it. What they took out, edit-wise, was that[long pause] I gotta think about how to say this. And Im grateful for all of it, I wouldnt trade it for the worldbut it didnt squelch much, yknow? It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. And occasionally when I get up to Los Angeles, sometimes Ill go out on the weekend, and some of these clubs, manthis new generation in the clubs, man, theyre playing this song, and when it comes on theyre screaming it out to each other. It was a wonderful experience. This was in the 80s? I was recording up to the day before I went to Europe, Singer recalled. Cant we stop? And eventually I had to say, Look, dont book any more shows after October. Well, what Im about to sayIm gonna come across as a prima donna, but if theres any singers out there reading this at this point, theyll understand completely. If you want to make a song a hit record, it's got to be clean, crisp, and to the point. I didnt do that. It worked out really great. I was back in my house February 1stIll never forget that date. Cause hes brilliant. And a lot of things we did, but the point is we were toast. I'm 22, 23 years-old and I like to play up high, and he suggested to . On stage, Craig is the person I react to the most because solo-wise, he's the one who is always doing something new. I like to play on stage and have that good feeling that comes from the people. Im looking at it very simply. Then when it came to the rest of the kit, I could get used to the sounds and the feel of the drums one at a time, and not be over powered by the immensity of the whole situation. I dont wanna see that get damaged. I had always sort of planned to go, but I wasnt sure I was gonna go, you know what I mean? AD: It's the difference that's required by the song. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. It was getting annoying. Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. Yeah., He knows he wasnt the only drummer considered for the role but he was surprised when Bruce Kulick later told him that one of his heroes, Aynsley Dunbar, had been auditioned and then ruled out. Is it just that people can relate to the sentiment in that song? RM: What kind of practicing are you able to do on the road? You work on something for so many years, and you attain what you attain, which was an amazing feat, and then its sort of like the rug is pulled out from under you. I thought in my own mind that before you could even go out there and play, you had to be as good as the people you were listening to on records. RM: What kind of music was Blue Whale playing? Which in those days was not good. Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. No, I didnt. Ive come to find out that theres a generation of kids who think its classic and wish they could find the arcade version. In these days, it would actually be respectable! Sure. But the reason I do that is so I can listen back to all the things I played and pick out the parts that worked and sounded good.
